What is Energy Healing?
by Intuitive Energy Healer and Spiritual Counselor Robin Hallett
I was first introduced to Energy Healing in 1996 after the death of my mother left me emotionally spent and in physical pain.
I was having regular back spasms that lead to a frozen neck and shoulder which lead to jaw issues; I was in almost constant physical pain–including some major dental hell. Nobody seemed to be able to help; not the doctor, not the massage therapist, not the chiropractor, not even the orthodontist who fitted me with a nightguard to keep me from grinding my teeth down to the gum line while I slept.
It was an energy healer who finally helped me find relief.
I had been seeing a massage therapist for several weeks when she finally said, I don’t think this is going to help you until you clear some energetic blockages that are at the root of all this physical tension. I had no idea what she was talking about. She told me I probably had some blocked chakras which were making my energy field kind of muddled and she referred me to an Energy Healing Practitioner for treatment.
I had never heard of an energy field, or life force energy. To tell you the truth, it all sounded a little whacky to me. I’m a skeptic at heart, but something told me to try it. I remember at the end of the first healing session, I felt a relief which I referred to as being like doing 10 years of traditional talk therapy at once. I felt not just physically eased, it was like my heart and mind were peaceful too. After a handful of weekly sessions, I was able to move my arm above my head which I hadn’t been able to do in months, my migraines had subsided, and I felt a new clarity about my life.
After a few sessions, I was feeling better. I could turn my head again, my lower back stopped hurting, and I felt less depressed than I had in months.
Energy healing is beginning to show up in mainstream channels as the new and popular thing to try.
There are plenty of celebrities to thank for endorsing it publicly like Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Ashley Judd, not to mention Dr. Oz, and Oprah; and many more allopathic physicians who recommend it as a form of treatment such as Dr. Christiane Northrup and Dr. Lissa Rankin. Energy Healing or Energy Medicine, as it’s sometimes called, is becoming more accepted in the mainstream as well because contemporary science is beginning to study and prove its validity.
The interesting thing is, energy healing has been practiced all over the world in many cultures for more than 5,000 years!
But only recently (like in the last 130 years) has it been introduced in the United States. Somewhere along the line, you might have heard of the chakras or the subtle energy body, or hands-on healing, or healing touch, or Reiki. These are all terms connected to the field of energy healing.
You may have heard about spiritual teachers and authors like Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, Louise Hay, Cheryl Richardson, Neale Donald Walsch, and Gary Zukav who all speak to the vital life force energy within each of us. Donna Eden, Barbara Brennan, Rosalyn Bruyere, and Anodea Judith have written extensively about energy healing and spent their lives teaching others how to heal.
Many of us have been exposed to Yoga in some form or another; in the west many consider yoga to be a fitness activity, but that’s only one aspect of yoga. The deeper benefit of yoga is as a form of energy clearing and spiritual practice. Meditation practice centers on a person’s energy.
Energy Healing is the answer to physical and emotional issues which compromise our health and well-being.
My pain issues were tied to emotional ones: the stress and shock of watching my mother have a debilitating stroke at an age when I was completely unprepared to become her primary caregiver were enough, but taking care of her for almost a year and then watching her not recover and eventually losing her pushed me to a stress point I hope I never experience again in my life.
What is energy healing?
Energy Healing is a practice that promotes positive change in people. It involves an offering of life-force-energy (called chi or prana) that enables change towards greater peace, harmony, health, vibrancy, and full expression of one’s true self.
How does energy healing work?
Energy healing is the practice of balancing the energy field that surrounds and penetrates your body.
You may have heard of life force energy referred to as “chi,” or “prana,” and maybe you’ve heard the term “aura” for the energy field. This energy is referenced in many cultural traditions and is at the core of many alternative healing practices. When I perform healing, I often address the individual chakras, which correspond to a person’s mental, emotional, and physical self. I’ve written about the seven major chakras here.
Your energy has an impact on how the rest of your being is doing. Your energy can be healed and because of this, you are able to improve physically.
For example, Ayurveda (the traditional medical system of India) and Traditional Chinese Medicine–acupuncture–view health as the free flow of energy and disease as blocks in the energy flow. Both modalities work to open energy channels. The chakras (or “wheels” of energy in Sanskrit) of Ayurveda correspond to what in Western medicine we describe as the endocrine system.
Health issues are interconnected, your physical and emotional state also impacts your energy field.
Often, illness is the only way the body has of letting you know something needs looking into in your emotional or spiritual life. You might not know what energy is, but you feel it when you’re in a funk, don’t you? When you’re sad or lonely or angry or anxious, that’s the energy talking to you.
Back to my story about my own experience with energy healing
I remember how quickly the doctors moved to prescribe medications to “try and solve the problem” and when that didn’t work, they suggested surgery. Three doctor visits, a handful of physical therapy, and if it’s still not better, let’s operate.
Quick and fast is something we’ve come to expect in our culture, but in terms of healing, quick and fast never lasts. The bone doctor recommended surgery and so did the orthodontist.
I cannot tell you how many people I have met in my healing room after they’ve had these kinds of surgeries, only to find that the problem hasn’t gone away. It’s not that we shouldn’t have medical procedures or avail ourselves of western medicine, I believe there is a blessing in every art. When we lean too heavily on one modality for healing, there cannot be balance. Also, when we do not participate in our own healing by taking responsibility for what is causing the pain, recovery is rarely the outcome.
Eventually, I gave up on the western ideas for my particular illness, because I was feeling so much better receiving the energy healing. I also found an excellent acupuncturist who ‘gave me needles’ twice per month until all of my spasms subsided. I continued to receive healing, and still do to this day.
How did I get started as an energy healer?
How did I end up as an Intuitive Healer?
Short story: In 1996, my mother had a very sudden stroke due to a birth defect in her brain that went undetected.
My mom was dying and she was just 53 and in perfect health. As she died, I witnessed a process going on inside her that snapped me into the reality that there is way more going on than what we can see. An energy was moving through me that said, we only have this moment, we can’t know what will happen in the next one.
I understood in an instant that the past is over and there is only this moment here and now.
All those things I had said and done were over–my “mistakes,” my choices in the past were done; I couldn’t change what happened and I couldn’t take it back – I had to learn how to be in the present reality and learn to forgive myself.
The day my mother died was so shocking on so many levels that I found myself on my knees, praying for one of the first times asking that my unique purpose in life be revealed. I remember saying, “I have no idea what THIS is that I am feeling, noticing, seeing… but please let me help others, let me express this to others.”
Soon I began to study with different healers, teachers. It was as if one experience blended into the next one, an opportunity would pop up out of nowhere. You name it, I have tried it! Let me tell you, not all of those experiences were great. At times, I really had to laugh about it. Still, I learned something from each one, and I am fond of saying that sometimes the worst experience makes the best teacher!
For those of us interested in making a shift, changing a pattern, feeling more fully present and embodied – A healing journey is something we must do. And you gotta’ try different things to find what feels really good and right for you. I continue to work with my own healer and teachers. I think it is very important that you know this- I am a work in progress too! There really is no end on a person’s journey. Even death isn’t an ending, it is a transition.
My Background – Where did I study?
I am the first person to tell you, you do NOT need an Earthly Credential to be of service in the world.
I am deeply grateful to my teachers. I’ve logged a lot of hours over the years studying various modalities in the field of energy healing and traditional counseling. The places I’ve studied where I received something profound: Barbara Brennan School of Healing. Center for Intentional Living, Nondual Kabbalistic Training, PsychoEnergetics Training
I study the Course in Miracles and am a fan of many eastern and western teachers and philosophies.
As a healer, my goal is to help you deal with the underlying energy before illness occurs.
How do I work with clients?
Kindly note, that since Covid began I have been working solely by video or telephone. I am no longer seeing clients in person.
In my practice, I combine my intuitive gifts to guide clients and energy work (laying on of hands) to bring about lasting change on the physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental levels of our being.
I believe that physical symptoms are the body’s way of warning you that there is an issue in your life that needs your attention. The body will usually tell us when something needs looking into. That doesn’t always mean we listen! I don’t believe there is a one size fits all technique, so each session is different. Each person is different, our ailments and discomfort manifest differently.
What kind of healing work do I do?
Energy healing at its most powerful involves a lot of training and development. I have worked over the years to hone my skills in energy perception and energy control.
At the same time, I continually work to develop myself both personally and spiritually. I have studied various healing modalities such as Barbara Brennan Energy Healing, Healing Touch, Reiki, Acupuncture, Acupressure, Aromatherapy, and Reflexology. In addition, I have studied traditional talk therapy, and Life Coaching. In our work together, I will use these modalities as they are appropriate to the situation.
How do I do Energy Work? What will your experience be like?
It is very important that you work with a healer who you feel safe with. A working relationship based on trust creates a strong foundation for the healing work to happen.
I care very much about your comfort and safety in our work together. Healing work is done on a massage table. You will remain fully clothed. I connect with your energy field by lightly touching access points along your body. You will feel relaxed as the healing energy flows through your body.
Clients often say they feel peacefulness, a pleasant shift in consciousness, and sometimes they feel emotional as old energy patterns or memories surface to be released.
You may experience various physical sensations throughout your body as well as feelings of love, gratitude, wholeness, balance, relief, and peace. The intensity of the healing may vary from one session to the next. You and I are like a tuning fork working together to attune the energies to the highest vibration we can achieve.
What kinds of issues can be addressed with Healing sessions?
Healing sessions can benefit many issues and conditions. Over the years, I’ve helped with:
Anxiety, stress, and depression
Addiction issues
Stuck life issues – feeling “lost”
Relationship issues, family issues
Finding your passion and your purpose in life
Healing from abuse
Improving mental focus and clarity
Anger
Migraines
Back pain
Pain without a Diagnosis, chronic pain
Cancer
Infertility and menstrual irregularities
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Prostate issues
Why do I do this work?
I am passionate about supporting people. I am excited by the concept that we create our own reality and I believe because of this, we can heal ourselves first and foremost by becoming aware of our thoughts and patterns. When we change our thoughts, we change our experience.
It may sound corny, but I’ve always wanted to help people. Helping to bring forward the many positive qualities I intuitively “see” while gently addressing the wounding we carry is my passion. I intuitively see what goes on behind the story and what can work to help heal those areas in a person’s life.
How long have I been offering energy healing to people?
I began studying in 1996 and I officially opened my healing practice in 2001. I love my calling. It is not a job, it is a passion. Each person I work with is a gift, and I am honored to witness their healing process.
